Generation G #PhumaMfazi Campaign
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a profound and widespread problem in South Africa, impacting almost every aspect of life. GBV (which disproportionately affects women and girls) is systemic and deeply entrenched in institutions, cultures and traditions in South Africa. This Women’s Month, Generation G has embarked on a campaign called #PhumaMfazi, and partners with women’s rights practitioners involved in gender-based violence work about what we could do to practically resource women in the continued fight against GBV.
The most common response from survivors of gender-based violence tends to include retrospect of: “I wish I were able to at least protect myself at that time”. It is their stories and desires for agency and power in their own hands that have become a piercing indictment of the reality that women in South Africa, women anywhere, as well as a moment for men all over the nation to consider and reimagine a world where women don’t have to weaponise themselves to survive another day.
Responding to this, Generation G embarked on a four-week hybrid campaign that comprised of online conversations hosted every Thursday, leading up to a self-defence class that was hosted on the 31st of August geared towards empowering women with community and skills to empower themselves.

Civic Education Project Launch and Stakeholder Roundtable Meeting
From approximately twenty-eight million registered South African voters for the 2024 National Elections, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) results show that only a rounded fifty-eight per cent managed to cast valid votes. This could highly likely mean that about forty-two per cent of registered voters in South Africa lack civic education and therefore see no significance in following through with their right to vote.
In a series of tireless, numerous efforts already put into tackling this issue before the 2024 elections, Activate! Change Drivers showed resilience by hosting a roundtable stakeholder meeting coupled with the Civic Education Projects Launch on the 18th of September, 2024, at Constitution Hill, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Tembisa GBV Community Dialogue
Based on the South African Official Statistics Analysis, a fifth of women have in various ways endured brutality in intimate relationships, and a handful of some women have been wounded by men they know and men they are not acquainted with. This is a startling analysis considering the ironic popular belief that men are instinctively supposed to protect women. To tackle this issue, private and public sectors have to join forces and come to a common ground on nullifying the current state of affairs.
Taking the initiative, Activate Change Drivers (ACD) Generation G Programme in collaboration with Mordecai Ndlovu Foundation hosted a Gender Based Violence Community Dialogue to create a gender-just and violence-free society on the 25th of May, 2024, at Madelakufa Community Ground, Thembisa. The event kicked off with a thirty-minute session of cardio exercises, as an interesting way of linking Fitness and Health with Mental Health and Gender-Based Violence.
