Celebrating Mandela Through AI Creative Challenge

As South Africa and the world prepare to commemorate Nelson Mandela Day on the 18th of July , the Gen AI Africa Podcast is calling on young people to honour the legacy of the father of South Africa’s democracy through creativity, innovation, and digital storytelling.

Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to the struggle for justice, equality, peace, and human dignity. One of his most enduring messages reminds us that “An injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere.” His legacy continues to inspire generations to stand up for human rights and build a more inclusive society.

In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, young people have unprecedented access to generative artificial intelligence and creative technologies that enable them to tell powerful stories through posters, videos, digital art, animations, infographics, and photography. Harnessing these opportunities, the Gen AI Africa Podcast has launched the “I Am Mandela for 67 Minutes” Creative Challenge, inviting South African youth to reflect on one simple but powerful question:

What would you change to make the world a better place?

The initiative encourages participants to use AI-powered tools alongside their own creativity to produce artwork, videos, posters, animations, or infographics that reflect Mandela’s values and inspire positive social change. The campaign seeks to amplify youth voices during Mandela Month while demonstrating how technology can be used responsibly for civic engagement and storytelling.

Speaking about the initiative, Gen AI Africa Podcast Creative Director Mr. Tulani Bango said the campaign is about allowing young people to celebrate Mandela in ways that resonate with their own identities and experiences.

With this initiative, we want young people to celebrate the father of South African democracy in their own languages and through their own creativity. We want them to reimagine the world they want to leave behind, and together we will shape powerful narratives from the stories and creative works we receive. Art remains one of the strongest tools for communication and advocacy, and as the podcast, we recognise its power.”

Bango added that today’s digital era provides limitless opportunities for young people to express themselves and influence the future.

The information ecosystem is more open than ever before, and we are looking forward to receiving animations, videos, digital artwork, posters, and infographics from across the country.”

Coming from Mandela’s home province, the Eastern Cape, Bango reflected on the values that continue to shape communities.

Peace, democracy, and Ubuntu are what we pride ourselves on. Ubuntu reminds us that ‘I am because you are.’ We grew up sharing what little we had because of Mandela’s influence in our lives. I believe we do not celebrate him enough. On 18 July 2026, let us all honour his legacy with love, kindness, and service to others.”

Youth activist Khulile Mazimba, known as The Activator from the Eastern Cape, also welcomed the campaign and encouraged young people to participate.

I will celebrate Mandela by passing on his values of leadership and freedom to the next generation through intergenerational dialogues. I believe we have so much to learn from the older generation about democracy. I may not consider myself a creative person, but expect something from me. This challenge is important because it gives young people an opportunity to express what Mandela and his leadership mean to them.”

As South Africans dedicate 67 minutes of service on Mandela Day, the Gen AI Africa Podcast hopes the campaign will inspire a new generation to combine creativity, technology, and active citizenship to keep Mandela’s vision alive.

Whether through AI-generated art, a short film, a poster, an animation, or an infographic, every young person has an opportunity to tell a story that promotes hope, justice, equality, and Ubuntu.

This Mandela Month, the challenge is simple: Be Mandela. Create. Inspire. Change the world.

Beyond 67 Minutes: A 2026 Mandela Month Blueprint for Active Citizenship

July 2026 marks 18 years since Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela’s passing. It also falls three years after the 2024 national and local elections, which brought coalition governments to most municipalities and raised the public’s expectation of accountability. The convergence of these dates is more than symbolic. It is an invitation to measure South Africa not only by how we remember Mandela, but by what we build in his name in the 51 weeks that follow Mandela Day.
