ACD In Community
The ACD In-Community programme aims to partner with Activators leading Youth Hubs across the country and empower them with knowledge, skills and key competencies to be able to deliver the ACTIVATE! Change Drivers training programme for the benefit of young people in communities across the country.
Historically, the young people (activators) who are part of the network, were allowed to join the network by applying to be an activator and were taken through a yearlong programme by the network staff.
Nearly years after the halt of the programme, due to COVID restrictions, it saw a relaunch in 2023 and to champion the recruitment of more young people into the network, it will is led by its alumni and active members of the network. They are called the A! Amplifiers, they come from every corner of South Africa, and they all carry a track record of a positive experience in the network and more so active participation in their communities.
Key Achievements
- 18 Activators from across the country have been recruited and trained to serve as Amplifiers for the ACD In-Community programme for the year 2023.
- Over the next 5 years, 900 youth leaders from various communities across the country will be recruited into the over 4300 youth network and be equipped to contribute meaningfully towards influencing positive change.

Generation G Programme
Generation G Programme, with ”G” standing for “Gender,” is a partnership which strives towards the creation of gender-just and violence-free societies with and for young men and women in their full diversity. The partnership comprises three partner organisations: Activate! Change Drivers, Action Aid and Sonke Gender Justice, working together to advance the objectives of the Programme in South Africa. The Generation G programme believes that investing in youth is central in achieving sustainable, inclusive, and stable societies.
This partnership engages an innovative gender-transformative strategy that equips youth leaders and civil society organisations (CSOs) to address the root causes of gender inequality and foster sustainable change.
Youth (15-32) are at the heart of this partnership, as catalysts for systemic change and key target groups often excluded from policymaking and legislative processes.
We make a special effort to amplify the voices of youth, in all their diversity. We aim to raise public support, advocate for improved policies and laws, and strengthen civil society by addressing gender injustices.
The programme has a national footprint in South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, Morocco, Indonesia and Lebanon, and Jordan.
NYRI
National Youth Resilience Initiative
The NYRI is a multi-stakeholder programme driven by various national actors from government, civil society, academic and development cooperation that coordinates and implements a holistic approach structured into the following 5 pathways: Establishing and capacitating resilience, resourcing and supporting with opportunities to vulnerable youth, advocating for data support for resilience initiatives implemented by non-profit organizations, developing a framework for youth resilience work, and advocating for the further inclusion of youth in decision-making processes.
Together with the Department of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) and in partnership with the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) as well as core implementor’s Activate! Change Drivers, the Inclusive Violence and Crime Prevention (VCP) programme adapted the NYRI to build resilience in young people and allow them to respond positively to the adverse socio-economic challenges they may face.
The programme was conceptualized in 2020 to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, to promote the psychosocial well-being and resilience of youth in South Africa. Vulnerabilities and stressful factors such as unemployment and access to income, opportunities for further education and training, post COVID-19, demand a societal response to strengthen the resilience of our youth.
Activate!
Youth Hubs
ACTIVATE! Change Drivers has committed itself to strengthen the capacity of youth leaders to influence change in society. An important part of this commitment has been about creating enabling platforms for youth leaders to connect, share ideas and be inspired to actively contribute to the common good. The ACTIVATE! Youth Hubs, positioned strategically across South Africa’s nine provinces, enhance opportunities for connections, resource and knowledge sharing among Activators beyond the residential training space.

Become an Activator today
An Activator is an active young person who has gone through the ACD programme and is part of a network of young change drivers who are passionate about community development. The training of Activators began in 2012: more than 4 000 young people have undergone the training in all nine provinces of South Africa. As both individuals and networks, Activators have strongly influenced policy platforms and forums and decision-making structures.
