Our Strategy and Work
Creating a sustainable
leadership development programme
Since the advent of COVID-19, we have had to suspend the ACD programme which has been the heartbeat of the organisation and focus solely on the network component of our work.
It is noteworthy that both the sitting CEO and the Network Programme Director and several programme managers are graduates of the ACD programme. Their presence has naturally given rise to a great opportunity to reflect on the work of the organisation and the impact of the network over time.
We believe that the core focus and task going forward is to listen carefully to the voices of youth that have emerged within the network.
Given the current limitations of movement and gathering, we believe that our overarching strategy is to support Activators in Community. We aim to build on past work and strategies and see that work and those strategies come alive; to see the values and principles that we fundamentally believe in, grow within, without and beyond us; to take their shape and form and to trust that what we have imparted over years is sufficient enough to turn the narrative around.
Considerations for the organisation’s strategic direction for the future is still deeply embedded in the following four pillars with a further informed and intentional value to Activators which remains a priority through the four pillars below.
Building Social Solidarity
A central theme of the programme going forward is to promote a culture of community activism: to build social solidarity to address community wants and needs and to harvest existing and potential assets.
- Youth Hubs
- Mobilisation and Campaigns for Social Solidarity
- Communications and Social Media
Deepening Impact
Many of the issues that communities and youth face are deeply embedded and need to be addressed at a societal or structural level.
- Mobilisation
- Campaigns
- Capacity Building
- National Imbizo
- Big Nine Sectors
Expanding Reach
From its inception, ACTIVATE! Promoted the idea of an ACTIVATE! A network that would be able to advocate for youth, share and exchange knowledge and skills and expand access to resources, and opportunities. While the ACD programme inculcated a strong network identity, ACTIVATE! Was challenged to continue to maintain the momentum that was generated within the ACD programme and support a network of over 4325 Activators spread across the country.
- A! Network Fund
- Generation G
- Civic Education Programme
- National Youth Resilience Initiative
- Yango
- Climate Change
Activating Change
Promoting citizen assemblies as a way to formulate meaningful policy and an opportunity to share the many inspirational and impactful stores of the A! Network (Activate Network).
- Policy
- Civic Education
- Youth Hubs
Become an Activator today
An Activator is an active young person who has gone through the ACD programme and is part of a network of young change drivers who are passionate about community development. The training of Activators began in 2012: more than 4 000 young people have undergone the training in all nine provinces of South Africa. As both individuals and networks, Activators have strongly influenced policy platforms and forums and decision-making structures.
